Man who built up family butchery business
The family of Bishops Tawton butcher Dudley Elliott who died suddenly on 15 December, were overwhelmed by the support from the local community.
They received more than 600 cards expressing people’s condolences at his passing.
Dudley died at home at the age of 66, after some 40 years as the village butcher.
He was greatly respected for the way in which he sourced local produce, supported other local businesses in the area and made each and every customer feel valued.
He learned his trade as an apprentice to local butcher William Slee from whom he eventually took over the business.
Dudley married Grace in 1964. She worked at Boots the chemist, before joining Dudley at the butchers shop on Mr Slee’s retirement.
As well as offering meat it has, over the years, also introduced other goods such as groceries, milk and cheese as a service to the community when other shops in the village closed.
In the last two years his middle son, Dudley, and his daughter Katie-Jane have become involved in the business.
